Fricke Played A Bank Robber And Was Only Country Artist Ever To Act During Shows Series

Janie Added to Good Ol’ Boys Tour Stop in Bakersfield, Calif. on April 13th

NASHVILLE, Tenn.  Janie Fricke, one of Country music’s award-winning female artists of the 80’s, is celebrating the 40th Anniversary of The Dukes of Hazzard, just like all the fans of the famed television show, except there is one catch. Janie Fricke practically gave birth to the General Lee!!

What??? Yes, it’s true! Janie Fricke played Ginny, a bank robber – on Season 7 Episode 1; an 8-year flashback show – in which, she along with her sidekick robbed a bank and in an effort to get-away crashed their 1969 Dodge Charger (it was black at the time). That vehicle was hauled off to the junk yard where the ‘Duke Boys’ discovered it and with the help of Crazy Cooter Davenport got it fixed up, painted orange, and ready for Boss Hogg’s Hazzard County Race. It then officially became the General Lee!

“That was really an exciting time for me. We taped the show around 83 or 84 and I was doing a show with Merle Haggard in LA when the casting director came backstage and asked me if I wanted to be on the show. She said if I could sing, I could surely act,” says Janie Fricke. “I was the only country singer to ever play an acting role on the show. Other stars like Dottie West, Oak Ridge Boys and Freddy Fender all got to perform songs on the show in the Boar’s Nest. When we filmed the episode, it took us 10 days to tape that one show and we had to wear the same outfit every day. It was really funny because even the chickens on the show had a manager and agent. Yes, animals have agents too! It sure is amazing to think that show is forty years old. Fans bring General Lee cars for me to sign all the time at shows and it just proves that people still love the down-home country lifestyle that all the Dukes lived.”

Today the Good Ol’ Boys Tour and MuscleKingz Car Show & Concert series also announced the addition of Janie Fricke to the lineup for their first event of the year Saturday, April 13th in Bakersfield, California. The event also features Kip Moore, Bobby Bones & The Raging Idiots, Parmalee, Tom Wopat, Whey Jennings, Cooter’s Garage Band and Tom Solis. Original cast members from the Dukes of Hazzard will also attend, including Rick Hurst (Deputy Cletus), Byron Cherry (Coy Duke), Ben Jones (Crazy Cooter), Catherine Bach (Daisy Duke), Chris Hensel (Cousin Jeb Duke) and Sonny Shroyer (Enos Strate).

Two-time CMA and ACM Female Vocalist of the Year Janie Fricke has released The Essential JANIE FRICKE, through Sony Legacy to all digital service providers for streaming and downloading. The collection includes many of her 18 number one hits including “What’re You Doing Tonight,” “It Ain’t Easy Being Easy,” “He’s A Heartache (Looking For A Place To Happen),” “Tell Me A Lie” and more. All forty songs released on The Essential JANIE FRICKE are available to fans on Spotify, Amazon Music, among others.

“After so many wonderful years of recording, it’s a reward to see this compilation of both my favorite singles and duets presented in one project,” Fricke said. “I am thrilled beyond words, and thanks to all the great folks at Sony/Columbia Records.”

Raised on a farm in Indiana, Janie Fricke began singing in church, and later turned that talent into a career which began as one of the marketing industry’s most successful jingle singers. Long before her success as a country artist, millions of people became familiar with Fricke’s voice through ads for United Airlines, Coca-Cola, 7-Up, McDonald’s and Red Lobster. She soon became a session singer where she was singing background in the studio with some of the biggest country stars of the late 70’s and early 80’s, including Loretta Lynn, Eddie Rabbitt, Crystal Gayle, Ronnie Milsap, Barbara Mandrell, and Mel Tillis.

After a string of duets with such greats as Merle Haggard and Moe Bandy, Fricke landed a solo recording contract in the early 80’s and scored several hit singles, including “Don’t Worry ‘Bout Me Baby,” “He’s a Heartache” and “You’re Heart’s Not In It.” She won CMA’s coveted “Female Vocalist of the Year” in 1983 and ’84 and has been nominated for three Grammy Awards. She has been credited with over 1,600 album projects and scored 36 hit singles.

Janie spent the better part of 2018 on the road, touring the country and singing to her fans. Janie is looking forward to a very busy year to come. “I’m so thankful to continue touring on the road. We had a great year and are working in 2019!” says Janie. As I look back, it’s amazing to remember all the venues where we have performed, and the fans we met. What an incredible opportunity, especially with my GREAT band. Thanks to all of you!”

In recent years, Sony Music Entertainment made four of Fricke’s classic albumsavailable to fans on Spotify, Apple Music and other digital platforms via the Legacy Digital Vault campaign, including The First Word In MemoryThe Very Best of Janie FrickeBlack & White and Saddle in the Wind! The collection of albums features the 18-time chart-topper’s biggest hits, including “It Ain’t Easy Being Easy,” “Tell Me a Lie,” “She’s Single Again” and more.

In addition, Fricke put a spin of bluegrass with some fresh interpretations of many of her beloved tunes with the release of Country Side of Bluegrass. The 13-track collection was produced by Bil VornDick, whose credits also include Alison Krauss, Bela Fleck, and Marty Robbins, and features some of the finest pickers in the industry.

Dollywood’s Stellar Lineup

Dollywood’s Stellar Lineup

One of the most anticipated events of Dollywood’s Season of Showstoppers—the Spring Mix music series—has guests buzzing with excitement as more than 30 award-winning artists prepare to take to the park’s stages this month.

“I’m so excited to perform at Dollywood this spring”

Tweet this
Dollywood’s Spring Mix (April 11- 29) features three weeks of stellar performances across multiple genres. The impressive roster of Spring Mix artists have combined to earn 42 gold albums, 18 platinum albums, 25 Grammys, 12 Country Music Association Awards, 10 American Country Music Awards, four American Music Association Awards and 56 Dove Awards.

If there ever has been a year to take advantage of the value of a Dollywood season pass, this is it. All concerts are included with park admission, so guests planning to see artists appearing on different days should consider a season pass.

The first week includes classic country artists like Pam Tillis, Shenandoah, T.G. Sheppard, Suzy Bogguss and Connie Smith. The second week plays host to inspirational artists including Amy Grant, The Blind Boys of Alabama and comedienne Chonda Pierce – also known as “The Queen of Clean.” Classic artists like The Marshall Tucker Band, The Drifters, Atlanta Rhythm Section and Debby Boone entertain park guests during the final week of the event.

A limited number of reserved seating options are available for guests to guarantee their seats in the show of their choice. These packages—some of which include dinner at Front Porch Café, t-shirt and more—are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Packages are available at www.dollywood.com or by calling 1-800-DOLLYWOOD.

Even with all of the opportunities these iconic performers have had during their careers, the chance to play at Dolly Parton’s theme park is something they all hold in high regard. Atlanta Rhythm Section makes their Dollywood debut on Friday, April 27.

“We have been around for nearly 50 years, but there are always goals that you want to achieve,” said Rodney Justo, lead singer and founder of the group. “Finally, The Atlanta Rhythm Section gets to perform at Dollywood. We’re looking forward to seeing Dolly’s fans, as well as ours. One more off the bucket list!”

Superstar Grant anticipates her chance to grace the stage of Dollywood’s Celebrity Theater. She kicks off the inspirational week of performances on Wednesday, April 18.

“I’m so excited to perform at Dollywood this spring,” said the six-time Grammy winner and 22-time Dove Award winner. “I’m a longtime admirer of Dolly’s, so what a great opportunity this is going to be for me and for so many of my friends to gather for a day of music and adventure in the Great Smoky Mountains! There couldn’t be a more beautiful backdrop. I hope to see everyone there!”

Bogguss, a Dollywood entertainment alumnus, looks forward to her return as she and Gayle open the series on Wednesday, April 11.

“It’s always a homecoming of sorts when I play Dollywood,” Bogguss said. “Not only did I hone my show while I was there the first season in 1986, but I also got my record deal and became engaged! Lots of warm fuzzy memories as you’d guess, and I can’t wait to be back.”
